After the long wait, President Yoweri Museveni officially commissioned Nakivubo Stadium in the heart of Uganda ‘s capital city, Kampala on Thursday, 25th April 2024.
It was a special moment of joy, celebration and reflection of ultimate commitment and diligence as the country’s number one citizen commissioned this mega project.
This multi purpose stadium was rehabilitated and renovated by Ugandan tycoon Hamis “Ham” Kiggundu.
Flanked by the state minister of sports Hon. Peter Ogwang, President Museveni showered praise unto the diligent young billionaire.
“I thank Mr. Hamis Kiggundu for his innovative spirit and congratulate the NRM for the smart policy of involving the private sector.” President Museveni who was donned in his trademark white long sleeved shirt remarked.
“Mr. Kiggundu’s idea of constructing this stadium was clear to me during our previous meetings, and I promised him full government support as long as it benefits our people.” the president added.
President Museveni informed the masses that though Kiggundu renovated the stadium, it belongs to Uganda but he can only recover his investment for a meantime.
“Mr. Kiggundu can run it for the next 49 years to recoup his investment, but the stadium belongs to the people of Uganda. Future governments will decide its fate.” He noted.
“We shall build two more stadiums in the meantime and ensure that they meet international standards. Additionally, we will complement them with zonal stadiums in the near future. Prioritization is key; bugu bugu si muliro, akwata empola atuuka wala.
Thank you!.” He added.
Nakivubo Stadium was closed down in 2017 to pave way for its renovation.
Since that time, massive changes have been executed witnessing developments to an all seater arena, artificial playing turf, netball courts, basketball court, boxing arena, fully stocked gym, VIP executive box and others.
