Take a hypothetical scenario where, after full-time in the second round of the quarterfinals playoffs this Saturday, Rhinos has beaten Pirates by 10-07 points. This would mean that the aggregate score in that quarterfinal is seventeen-all since Pirates won the first round at Legends last Saturday by the same exact score.

But only one of the two teams can progress to the semifinal stage. This therefore necessitates a clear process of breaking this tie.

Teams participating in the 2024 Nile Special Rugby Championship signed a tournament manual that guides and governs how the competition is played.

This specific scenario of a draw/tie in the playoffs is well covered in Section 4.5.3 “Tie Breaker” of the manual. It states, verbatim, as follows:

Where at the end of the knockout matches i.e. quarter finals (over the two legs combined), semi finals (over the two legs combined), relegation play off (over the two legs combined) or Championship finals and teams are tied on match points the winner will be determined in the following order

30 minutes total of extra time i.e. 15 minutes each half with 5 minutes interval

The team with the most tries over the two legs or in the final

The team with the least disciplinary cards over the two legs or the final. For avoidance of doubt a red card equals two (2) yellow cards

Five place kicks per team along the along the 15metre line from touch in the side of kickers choice using 5 different kickers

If none of the above produces a result, then it will be resolved with a toss of a coin.

Going back to our hypothetical scenario, should Rhinos be leading Pirates by a three-point margin (a draw by aggregate score in the two rounds) at the final whistle, then the above-indicated procedure will be followed to determine which team progresses to the respective semifinals.

To paint a similar picture in the other quarterfinals, if Mongers beat Kobs by a four-point margin at Legends, or Buffaloes beat Hippos by a nineteen-point margin at Kyadondo, or Walukuba beat Heathens by a 25-point margin at the Abel Dhaira Stadium.

Two years ago, during the 2022 Uganda Cup, a coin was tossed, not once but twice, to decide who, between Heathens and Kobs, would progress to the final.

The second round of the championship playoffs quarterfinals will be played this Saturday.

QF 2 – Walukuba: Walukuba vs Heathens
