Men: Uganda 0-3 Madagascar

Madagascar won the male team gold during the on-going 2024 East Africa Regional Table Tennis Championship at the Lugogo Indoor Arena, Kampala.

The islanders condemned hosts Uganda to a comprehensive 3-0 victory in the final played on Table one.

The trio of Jonathan Ssenyonga, Joseph Sebatindira and Samuel Ankunda Mbabazi all lost their respective games.

Ssenyonga fell 0-3 to Antoine Razafinarivo (05-11, 08-11, 09-11). In the same vein, Sebatindira was defeated by Fabio Rakotoarimanana (3-0) with set scores of 03-11, 07-11 and 09-11.

Another Ugandan, Mbabazi staged a gallant display, falling to 2-3 to Stephen Ravonison.

Mbabazi won the first set 08-11 with Ravonison recovering to win the subsquent sets (Madagascar) 13-11 and 10-12 to make it 2-1.

The Ugandan fought back with a 11-05 set win in the fourth set to square the scores 2-all and force a decider.

Ravonison won 9-11 to seal Madagascar’s 3-0 win in the final and secure gold as Uganda finished second.

Uganda had also earlier defeated Djibouti 3-0 with Mbabazi outsmarting Ahmed Djamal 3-0 (11-06, 11-03 and 11-03).

Ssenyonga edged Abdallah Abdourazak Bourhan 3-1 (11-09, 08-11, 11-02 and 11-09) and Sebatindira defeated Houd Abdourahman 3-0 (11-02, 11-07 and 11-06).

Meanwhile, Uganda’s ladies’ team won gold medal after a 3-0 win over Kenya in the final on table two.

Jemimah Nakawala, Judith Parvin Nangonzi and Shanitah Namaala all won their matches for the victory

Nakawala beat Lisa Nasimuyu 3-0 (11-04, 11-06 and 11-05). Nangonzi recovered from a shock 04-11 loss to Dorren Juma in opening set to overturn 3-1; winning the rest of the sets 11-09, 11-03 and 11-07.

Namaala edged Lydia Setey 3-1. Setey won the opening set 11-07 before Namaala made it recording 11-09, 11-06 and 11-04.

Uganda’s men team was coached by Paul Mutambuze with the women side led by Alvin Katumba.

The single’s championship commenced on Wednesday, 24th April 2024 and will wind down on Thursday, 25th April 2024.

The championship is organized by Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA) with support from the ITTF. Other partners include National Council of Sports (NCS), CASA Miltu Hotel, Blue Berry Travel, Blue Sky Sports Center and Jibu Water.
