Wherever you look at the results from the ongoing Nile Special Rugby Men’s Championship, you’re bound to find a score that will jolt you.

During the opening round, freshly-promoted Eagles beat Walukuba and Hippos upset Kobs. Two weeks later, Hippos snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat by Heathens and Walukuba shocked Mongers by just a point. A further fortnight later, Kobs and Buffaloes settled for a draw while Mongers beat Black Pirates. Then in the eighth round, Buffaloes beat and kept Black Pirates scoreless as Eagles dominated Impis.

The regular season had been full of such plot twists that the standings and potential knockout pairs changed dramatically after every round.

That is why last weekend’s Easter break could not have come at a better time. For the players and teams to have some much-needed rest after two months of non-stop action since the year began and to prepare for the home run with three rounds left to play in the regular season.

And also for everyone else to pause, rewind, and brace themselves for an exciting climax.

But now, the break has ended and every jockey is back on their horse’s back for the ninth round. It’s going to be a mad dash; not to the finish line but to grab their place in the playoffs. Each of the twelve teams will get a place but only the top eight will play for the championship. The four lowest-ranked teams will play to survive relegation.
