Uganda 119/6

Vanuatu 84/4

Uganda won by 35 runs

Game 2: Uganda W v UAE W

Uganda 69/9

UAE 71/1

UAE won by 9 wickets

Victoria Pearls had mixed results from their warm-up games ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifiers. They lost to hosts UAE under the lights by 9 wickets but barely broke a sweat in the win against Vanuatu.

Uganda batted first in both games after winning the toss. However, blistering starts from the top order are still missing with the top order cleaned up cheaply in both games and it’s the middle order that has come to the rescue of the side to score over 100 against Vanuatu and just 69 against the UAE.

Stephanie Nampiina has had starts in both games while Rita Musamali (35 not out) had the batting form in the win against Vanuatu.

The ladies failed under the lights with the bat as they were reduced to 5/4 inside 4 overs. Only a recovery job from the middle order helped the side finish at a respectable 69/9 in 20 overs.

The batting is still an issue for the Victoria Pearls and compared to the scores from the other teams, runs is the currency in the desert. Scotland and Zimbabwe scored over 350 runs in their warm-up game while USA and Thailand the other teams in Uganda’s group scored over 120 in both of their warm-up games.

In the two games, Evelyn Anyipo showed her class with some hard lengths on very flat decks and she will be a great enforcer at the top of the order. Sarah Walaza will struggle with her pace but as long as she holds her line and length with the keeper standing, her deception could be good for the team. Sarah Akiteng and Consy Aweko have bowled in tandem and should both get a crack while Janet Mbabazi and Rita Musamali should offer the bowling back up.

The ladies will start their campaign against Scotland on Thursday evening and a win should boost their chances of qualifying as one of the two teams from Group A.

Uganda needs at least two wins to ensure passage to the semifinals with Sri Lanka, the favourite in the tournament, expected to win the group.
