Mid last week, Uganda Men’s 7s head coach Tolbert Onyango released seven senior players from his training squad. Five of them featured for their respective clubs in the second round of the Nile Special Rugby Championship playoffs on the weekend.
This news development was easily and quickly interpreted to mean that Uganda would send a new-look squad for the final round of the World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger 2024 on May 18-19 in Munich, Germany.
On Thursday morning today, after the pitch session at Kyadondo, Onyango named his 12-man travelling squad to put all speculations to bed.

Mubarak Wandera*, Allan Olango*, Alex Aturinda, Davis Shimwa, Mark Osuna*, Karim Arinaitwe*, Aaron Tukei*, Timothy Mugisha, Roy Kizito, Denis Etwau, Nobert Okeny, William Nkore (captain).
Uganda will have five fresh faces at the 2024 7s Challenger finale in Munich. These are Mubarak Wandera, Karim Arinaitwe, Mark Osuna, Allan Olango, and Aaron Tukei.
“We got a mix of experienced players and guys who have been in the camp for quite some time over a year now. I think it’s an opportune time for us to get them tested at the top level. They’ve gone through the paces and I’m sure they’re going to give it their best in about a week’s time.”

The rest of the squad, especially Denis Etwau, Alex Aturinda, and Nobert Okeny who have played in all past rounds this year, have lots of experience under their belts.
William Nkore
William Nkore will captain the squad in Munich, with Aturinda and Okeny as his assistants.
“We are looking forward to a good performance from this side. There will be good stories to tell from Munich,” Onyango added.
Uganda, currently ninth in the overall series standings, is in Pool B with Hong Kong China, Tonga, and Mexico for the tournament.
