For the first time ever in Uganda, the legends marathon will take center stage on Saturday, 20th April 2024 with the start and finishing point at Nakasero primary school playground in Kampala city.

Uganda’s sports legends across the divide in the respective disciplines as football, athletics, golf, netball, cricket, rugby, basketball, swimming, hockey, chess, tennis and others will take part; to shed a sweat for their life, network and keep fit.

Julius Nkuraija,a seasoned sports administrator and public health practicioner is the race director.

Nkuraija asserts that all is in place to have a smooth event with the routes for the 5KM, 21KM and 42 KM all well marked with proper safety measures in place.

He anticipates a great event, starting with the mandatory limbering drills to prepare the bodies of the runners and a proper cool down process that will be followed by healthy talks and net-working sessions.

“We expect a great run across all the distances. All the routes are safe and secure. We shall begin as usual with a warm up exercise for the bodies as early as 5:30 Am before flagging off” Nkuraija noted.

Veteran sports journalist Andrew Mwanguhya, a running enthusiast is the key brain behind this unique idea, a way how athletes transition into the post-sports life.

“The Legends Marathon is here. This is one way of recognizing our previous star sportsmen and women. It will be a time to have fun, interact, get educated and exercise” Mwanguhya states.

“The Legends Marathon is also here to show the way for the current sportsmen to prepare for life after active sport when they still can” he adds.

Double CommonWealth gold medalist Moses Ndiema Kipsiro will be the headline runner and will take part in the 5KM category.

Kipsiro, also a bronze medalist at the 2007 World Championships currently owns a running club in his native town of Kapchorwa.

As early as 6:00 AM, the 42 KM runners will hit the road with those in the 21KM following 30 minutes later.

By 7:00 AM, the 5KM runners will follow suit, flagged off by decorated Dr. Margret “Maggie” Blick Kigozi.

Kigozi is a former sportswoman herself who is now a consultant at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Rich line up:

A number of Uganda’s successful sportsmen and women of the yester-years have endorsed the Legends marathon.

In physical presence and absentia, a number of these stars are already on the bandwagon.

Moses Kipsiro, Dorcus Inzikuru, Solomon Mutai (athletics), Majidah Nantanda, Denis Onyango, Tom Lwanga, Jean Sseninde, Mujib Kasule (Football), Davis Karashani, Naomi Kayondo (Cricket), Peace Proscovia (Netball), Ganzi Mugula (Swimming), Deo Akope (Golf), Flavia Oketcho (Basketball) and others are part of this noble cause.

Uganda’s running society that of late has sprouted a number of clubs as Team Matooke, Kampala Hash Harriers (KH3), Gutsy Bunch, Fast & Furious and Alex Matovu’s Activate Uganda will also have a solid representation.

These runners optimally utilize such platforms as the Legends Marathon to meet and network as they fine tune their bodies for the upcoming local and international runs as the Comrades Marathon (South Africa) and the Tusker Lite Rwenozri Marathon (Kasese, Uganda).
