There were three matches to be played at a soaked Makerere Rugby Grounds during the Central Region Schools (boys) League Finals; the U-15, the U-17, and the U-20. But of them all, the third mattered the most because it featured the most senior students in the academic setup.
Just as they had done last year at the same venue, St Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) were in all three finals; two in the U-15 and U-17 categories against Kings College Budo, and in the U-20 category against Namilyango College.
They easily won the first two by 19-00 and 25-03 respectively to not only resurrect from last year’s three losses but also keep a historic treble in sight.

U-15: SMACK 19-00 Budo
U-17: SMACK 25-03 Budo
U-20: Namilyango 28-05 SMACK
Unfortunately, in the U-20 final, Namilyango were simply too good for SMACK. They won the match, 28-05, through astute tactical awareness and impeccable physicality.
SMACK were victims of their own decision making when, with multiple opportunities to put points on the board, they opted to go for the tries instead of kicks.
The score at half-time was 06-00 (penalty kicks by Job Wembabazi and Emmanuel Azirwe) in favour of the Namilyango Anchors. After the break, the SMACK Eagles finally scored a try (through Brandon Muhumuza) and gained some momentum.
However, their relentless strategy to play a physical game wore them out before the clock ticked past the hour mark.
From then, it was one-way traffic as Namilyango engaged another gear and started piling on the points. Three superb tries (by Nathan Kakaire, Tendo Kigozi, and Emmanuel Okurute), two conversions (by Wembabazi and Azirwe), and a penalty (by Wembabazi), all unanswered by arch rivals SMACK, delivered an emphatic 28-05 victory for Namilyango.
This brought Namilyango’s schools league tally to twelve titles while SMACK stayed stuck on their third for another year.
Overall, it was an impressive display of skills under the rainy weather by both teams – plus the other four in the preceding finals – and an entertaining display of athleticism in front of a capacity crowd.
