Sundowns 0-0 Yanga [Agg: 0-0, Sundowns win 3-2 on pen]
Al Ahly 2-0 Simba [Agg: 3-0]
The road for Tanzania’s Young Africans and Simba in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League came to end after losing to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and Egypt’s Al Ahly respectively.
First, Sundowns couldn’t break down a resilient Young Africans side at home with the two sides settling for a goalless draw like it happened in Dar es Salaam a week ago.
The Tanzanian side lost 3-2 on penalties but will feel aggrieved after being denied what appeared like a legit goal in the 59th minute.
In the 59th minute, Burkina Faso international Aziz Ki shot just inside the box hit the cross the bar and appeared to cross the line but referees even with the assistance of VAR didn’t give the goal.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Bafana Bafana number one Ronwen Williams saved twice from Aziz Ki and Dickson Job before Ibrahim Bacca sent his effort over the bar.
Ugandan defender Gift Fred made a second half substitute appearance for the Tanzanian side but Khalid Aucho missed again through injury while on the opposite, compatriot Denis Onyango was an unused substitute.
In Cairo, Al Ahly saw off a determined Simba SC 2-0 to win 3-0 on aggregate after an earlier 1-0 at Benjamin Mkapa stadium.
El Solia and Kahraba scored the goals for the Red Devils who now wait for the winner between five-time winners TP Mazembe and Angola’s Petro Atletico.
Sundowns will take on the winner between ASEC Mimosas and Esperance de Tunis in the semi-finals.
