Match Result: Uganda W v USA W

USA 110/5 (20 overs)

Uganda 111/2 (18.2/20 overs)

Uganda won by 8 wickets

Victoria Pearls found first and second gear as they picked up their first victory at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifiers in Abu Dhabi.

Uganda suffered a heavy defeat in their first game against Scotland and needed a victory against USA to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.

Uganda made one change to the team that lost to Scotland with Evelyn Anyipo making way for Esther Iloku.

USA won the toss and elected to bat first and they went about their business very quietly until Sarah Walaza broke the opening partnership for her only wicket in the game. Consy Aweko (1/28) and Sarah Akiteng (1/18) were the other bowlers to pick up wickets as USA finished on 110/5 in their 20 overs.

In the run chase, Esther Iloku and Proscovia Alako went cheaply with Uganda left railing at 9/2 inside 5 overs. However, a century partnership of 101 from Stephanie Nampiina (38 not out) and Immaculate Nakisuyi (68 not out) dug Uganda out of a hole to clinch victory with 10 balls to spare.

Nakisuyi rode her luck when she was put down by the keeper early in the game and her understanding with Stephanie especially the running between the wickets helped the team get over the line without exposing the rest of the batting.

The win against USA is only the second Uganda has picked up at this level and they will certainly enjoy it. The side only won one game at the global qualifiers in Netherlands six years ago.
